Introduction

The BMW 2 Series Active Tourer 225e xDrive isn't a car that sets out to provoke at first glance. It doesn't push itself into the foreground and deliberately avoids sporty exaggeration. Instead, it pursues a clear purpose: as much everyday usability as possible, with as little effort as possible — achieved through a modern plug-in hybrid powertrain. Our test car shows how well this approach works in real life.

Design and build quality

Visually, the 2 Series Active Tourer stays true to its role. Clean lines, functional proportions and an overall understated appearance define the exterior. Sporty aggression is nowhere to be found — nor is it the point. Instead, the focus is on interior space, which shows without the car looking bulky. Inside, BMW goes for a clearly laid-out cockpit and a logically structured architecture. Material quality is entirely fine for the segment, though it makes clear the Active Tourer doesn't aim to be a luxury model. In our test car's specific configuration, there was still room for improvement. Fully equipped, though, leather and wood trim noticeably upgrade the interior. Build quality stands out positively: nothing creaks, nothing feels loose or visibly cost-cut.

Interior

The Active Tourer is a classic everyday car — and you can tell in every situation. The interior offers generous space, a versatile layout, and a boot that handles both the weekend shop and the family holiday without issue. The raised seating position improves visibility, and getting in and out is effortless. Especially in urban settings and on frequent short trips, the electric drivetrain plays to its strengths.

Powertrain and handling

The 225e xDrive combines a 1.5-litre three-cylinder petrol engine with an electric motor on the rear axle. The result is not only all-wheel drive, but also a combined output of 245 hp when the battery is charged. In daily use, the Active Tourer surprises with unexpectedly strong acceleration. The 0–100 km/h sprint in 6.7 seconds feels almost atypically dynamic for a car of this class. The xDrive all-wheel-drive system adds extra security and confident traction — particularly in wet or poor road conditions. Despite these figures, the character stays clearly comfort-oriented. The powertrain feels harmoniously tuned, with no jarring transitions between electric and combustion power.

Driver assistance and safety

BMW equips the 2 Series Active Tourer with the key assistance systems as standard. Lane-keeping assist, cruise control and emergency braking functions are all on board. In daily use, the systems work reliably and unobtrusively. The EU speed limit warning chime can be silenced with a simple press of a steering wheel button — an important detail for a car used frequently in everyday life.

Efficiency

Thanks to plug-in hybrid technology, the BMW can be driven purely electrically surprisingly often in daily use. Up to 80 km is realistic with a gentle driving style — enough for many commuter routes. Once the battery is depleted, consumption rises as expected. Up to 3.8 litres per 100 km is then possible, provided Sport mode stays a menu option rather than a habit. Drive with discipline and charge regularly, and you're rewarded with low running costs.

Verdict

The BMW 2 Series Active Tourer U06 225e xDrive is no emotional seducer and no prestige object. It's a well thought out, versatile and pleasantly unassuming car that convincingly combines everyday usability, efficiency and performance. For families and commuters who want to make sensible use of electric range without giving up performance or safety, the Active Tourer is a very well-rounded solution.
